Stories of the Week: October 31 – November 7

As we end this week, the Collaborative is back with another Stories of the Week recap. From New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani defending the immigrant community in the city to data this year showing the positive economic impact of immigrants in the U.S. Here are the top stories impacting the well-being of im/migrants this week.

After his victory on Tuesday, New York City Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani said in his victory speech, “New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”

ICE made expansive request for taxpayer data amid IRS pushback

Federal immigration enforcement officials sought a wide range of sensitive information about suspected undocumented immigrants from the IRS, including the names of relatives, before narrowing the request amid pushback from agency officials, according to a new court filing.



The DOJ has been firing judges with immigrant defense backgrounds

The Department of Justice continues to fire judges with an immigration background. Those dismissals come as the administration has ramped up mass deportations of those without legal status and sometimes pointed to judges as obstacles in that effort.

DHS ends protections for South Sudanese who fled civil war

The Department of Homeland Security is revoking temporary
protected status for thousands
of South Sudanese nationals
who fled civil war and instability
in the East African country, per
a notice uploaded to the
Federal Register on Wednesday.
The revocation is expected to
affect some of the 5,000 South
Sudanese who currently live in
the United States.

Pope Leo calls for ‘deep reflection’ about treatment of detained migrants in the United States

Pope Leo XIV called for “deep reflection” in the United States about the treatment of migrants held in detention, saying that “many people who have lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what is going on right now.”

New Data: Immigrants Keep Economy Strong, As Congress Considers Wasting Billions on Mass Deportation
