Stories of the Week: June 20 – June 27

As we close out this week, the Collaborative is back with another Stories of the Week recap for June 20th – June 27th. From how the “Big Beautiful Bill” could have consequences for immigration enforcement to how conversations with Honduras regarding border security; here are the top stories impacting the wellbeing of im/migrants.

President Trump’s spending cuts and border security package would inject roughly $150 billion into his mass deportation agenda over the next four years, funding everything from an extension of the border wall to thousands of additional law enforcement staff.  


A look at how Trump’s big bill could change the US immigration system

ICE holding a record 59,000 immigrant detainees, nearly half with no criminal record, internal data show

The Trump administration continues to expand nationwide immigration arrests, according to internal government data obtained by CBS News. As of Monday, June 23, ICE’s detention level was at over 140% capacity. The federal statistics show nearly half of those currently detained by ICE lack a criminal record,  and fewer than 30% have been convicted of crimes: a sign of the widening scope of President Trump’s escalating crackdown on illegal immigration. 


Protesters rally at US sheriffs meeting to oppose partnerships with immigration authorities

Immigrants’ rights advocates rallied on Tuesday outside a national gathering of sheriffs to protest local law enforcement‘s increasing cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The groups, including the ACLU, presented a letter signed by more than 12,000 people urging sheriffs across the country to withdraw from controversial 287(g) agreements.

In 2015, over 1 million migrants and refugees arrived in Lesbos, where the north shore is just 6 miles from Turkey. The influx of men, women, and children fleeing war and poverty sparked a humanitarian crisis that shook the EU. A decade later, the fallout continues to resonate on the island and beyond. 

Honduras and US discuss immigration, security after tense start under Trump

Honduras President Xiomara Castro and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem discussed immigration and border security in their first meeting Wednesday, after Castro had previously rejected President Donald Trump’s calls for ramped up deportations.
