TOP STORY OF THE WEEK

In particular, majorities disapprove of involving local law enforcement in deportation efforts and of suspending asylum applications.

NATIONAL STORIES OF THE WEEK

After early reprieve from immigration enforcement, farming industry reckons with raids
President Trump pledged to help protect agricultural workers just days after federal immigration officials targeted farms and meat packing plants in a widespread effort to detain undocumented immigrants. His administration has sent mixed messages to the agricultural sector about how mass deportations may affect the industry. Agriculture is one of several U.S. industries that rely on workers with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or parole-based work authorization, which have been revoked in recent months.

As Trump pledges mass deportation, he’s creating more undocumented people
Federal agents are arresting migrants at immigration courts in the Trump administration’s latest tactic to fast-track deportation. Attorneys say immigration enforcement officers have been waiting in immigration court buildings and arresting migrants who have had their cases dismissed.

New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested Tuesday at Manhattan’s immigration court, becoming the latest elected official to be detained or forcibly removed from immigration-related proceedings amid the Trump administration’s sweeping deportation efforts.
INTERNATIONAL STORIES OF THE WEEK

Britain, under pressure on immigration, urges reform of European human rights framework
On Wednesday, Britain called for reforms to the European Convention on Human Rights, responding to mounting domestic pressure to take a tougher stance on illegal immigration. Critics argue that the Convention enables a foreign court to interfere in sensitive national policies, particularly immigration and deportation decisions. The UK government’s push for change has received support from some other member states that also seek to amend the Convention to ease deportation procedures.
